Esra Alhamal

Esra Alhamal is a Saudi PhD student based in London. She is doing her PhD in Architecture and Patterns at the University of East London. For the past two years, she has been learning Persian and Turkish illumination with various artists. She undertook a series of intensive courses with the Art of Islamic Pattern and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts.

She is learning the traditional methods, but experimenting with different styles to find her own voice within that beautiful art.

The patterns she paints are based on geometric grids and rules. For the illuminations, she uses tea stained and hand treated paper, real gold 22-23 Ct and handmade natural colours or high quality readymade gouache. One simple piece takes a week to be completed; an average of ten to twenty hours of work.
