Social Connections. Illuminated illustration on an Arabic Book Page

Social Connections. Illuminated illustration on an Arabic Book Page

This art is known as Islamic illumination (Tezhip), where you apply gold to decorative patterns in books and manuscripts. It is a traditional method, but this is my contemporary take on it.

🎨 I painted this Persian inspired floral pattern with real green gold (18 ct) and high quality gouache colours on a page from an Arabic book. The painting and the shading follows the traditional methods of the art of Islamic illumination. The page has been tea stained and hand treated.

📖 The page comes from a book called: "What Happened to the Saudis?" By: Ghassan Hamid Omar
The book is a collection of short articles that discusses the Saudi society and the social issues it suffers from.
For more information about the book:

📄 This particular page "Social Connections" talks about social connections also knowns as "wasta"and their impact on the Saudi society. The Arabic calligraphy on this page is a classic font for printed books. This painting is part of the Saudi Pages series that come from the same book to create an interesting narrative.

🖼️ Size: 21.5cm* 14cm ( 8.46 in * 5.5 in). It does not come framed. Box frame is recommended or any frame that would work with your house or office.

📍This painting was exhibited in Transition, a collaborative art show for emerging Middle Eastern Artists in London, UK.
